The National Institute of Technical Teacher Training & Research (NITTTR) Chandigarh is one of the four Regional Technical Teachers' Training Institutes established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (then Ministry of Education), Government of India in 1967 in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Government (up to 1974). It was designed to meet the requirements of developing polytechnic education in the northern region covering the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Union Territory of Chandigarh.
The NITTTR Chandigarh started with long term teachers' training programmes for polytechnic teachers in 1967 and was also entrusted with the responsibility of promoting curriculum development work for the states in the region. To improve the competence of teachers for implementing new curricula designed by this institute, short term courses have been offered since 1967.
The National Institute of Technical Teacher Training & Research has been recognized as a 'Research Centre' by Panjab University, Chandigarh (in 2006) as well as by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar (Punjab) (in 2005) for pursuing research work leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy i.e. PhD.
The NITTTR Chandigarh offers Regular Master of Engineering Programmes in Engineering Education, Manufacturing Technology, Construction Technology and Management, Computer Science and Engineering, Instrumentation and Control, and Electronics and Communication Engineering. It also offers Modular Master of Engineering Programmes in all the above disciplines.
The Department of Information Management and Emerging Engineering conducts long term and short term programmes in the emerging areas of Information Technology and Management.
The vision of the National Institute of Technical Teacher Training & Research is to be a Lead Resource Institute for Promoting Excellence in Technical Education System. Its mission includes offering continuing education and training programs for the faculty and staff of the technical education system, developing need-based curricula and instructional material, undertaking research and development, and providing extension and consultancy services.
