In 1986, the Bhilai Institute of Technology Trust kindly granted permission for the institution to be established in Durg, to advance technical education. Since its founding as the first independently funded engineering college in the former Madhya Pradesh, BIT has grown to become one of the central region's most sought-after professional institutions. BIT continues to be firm in its dedication to giving students a top-notch education.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved the courses that BIT offers. The Institute is affiliated with Swami Vivekananda Technical University (CSVTU) in Chhattisgarh. Bhilai Institute of Technology (BIT) in Durg offers a range of infrastructure facilities to support its academic and extracurricular activities. Here are some key highlights of the institute's infrastructure:

Medical Facility- First aid and clinical consultation are available to on-site students. The institute has assigned a female medical officer for the girls' accommodation and a separate medical officer for the boys' hostel. The hospitals are open seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.

Library- Approximately 55,000 books in various engineering, science, computer application, and management fields are housed in the institute's state-of-the-art central library. For students' convenience, it also features a separate reference section with about 20,000 books. Both PG and Research scholars' rooms and the faculty and staff's rooms are separate. There are 50 computers in each of these areas with free internet connection so users can browse e-books, e-journals, and e-magazines.

Hostel- The institute provides hostels for both girls and boys. At the moment, it can hold 350 boys and 190 girls.  Every essential and fundamental amenity is present in both hostels.

Sports- For the throughout the year overall development of future engineers, entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, etc., BIT, Durg provides well-maintained sports facilities. Students can play games and use the sports facilities inside the institute as well as outside.

Auditorium- BIT Durg amenities, one of which is a student auditorium on campus. Music performances, lectures, and other events are held in the auditorium.
