It is one of the Indian Institutes of Technology, which are premier Engineering and Technology institutes in India. The institution was initially established in the Government Engineering College (GEC) at Sejbahar, Raipur, and later shifted to its permanent campus in Kutelabhata village, Chhattisgarh.

IIT Bhilai is ranked 81st among the Engineering colleges of India by NIRF in 2023. This institute is also recognized by UGC and MHRD.
