It was established in 1945 and was reconstructed as a separate college of law on April 14, 1989. The college was renamed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College of Law in honor of the chief architect of the Constitution of India on May 10, 1991. 

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College of Law is affiliated with Andhra University and is recognized as an advanced center in law by the University Grants Commission. The college holds a favorable ranking, being placed 24 out of 70 law colleges in India by India Today in 2023.
